What should you consider when planning days off work in 2025?

Weekends and long weekends:

In 2025, several holidays fall close to weekends, making it easier to plan extended breaks. For instance, with May 1 (Labor Day) on a Thursday, so taking Friday off could result in a four-day weekend. Similarly, Christmas (December 25–26) creates a natural long weekend.

Compensation for holidays falling on Saturday:

Employees are entitled to an extra day off if a holiday falls on a Saturday, such as May 3 (Constitution Day) and November 1 (All Saints’ Day) in 2025. In some companies, you can have a specific day already pre-assigned as compensation, so it’s worth checking it out with your employer.

Retail closures:

Most shops, supermarkets, and retail outlets remain closed on public holidays, with exceptions for gas stations, pharmacies, and small owner-operated stores. Plan your shopping, especially for Easter and Christmas.

Public transport:

Busses, trains, and other means of transport may operate on a different schedule, so it’s worth considering if you wish to go outside and do not own a bike or a car.
